Le rotor est une avancée extraordinaire dans le monde des montres modernes. Ce composant indispensable au mécanisme de remontage automatique, a été inventé par le célèbre horloger suisse Abraham-Louis Perrelet. Dans les années 1770, il a créé le garde-temps à remontage automatique équipé d’un rotor, qui permet de remonter le ressort avec précision dans les deux sens. On l’appellera plus tard “montre perpétuelle”, en raison de son mouvement éternel.



À l’origine, le rotor était principalement utilisé dans les montres de poche, qui, lorsqu’elles ont été inventées pour la première fois, devaient être remontées pendant environ 15 minutes afin de fonctionner huit jours. C’était la seule source d’énergie de la montre. Par la suite, le remontage automatique a été introduit dans les montres mécaniques, et la réserve de marche permettait de conserver deux jours d’énergie dans la montre, en plus du fonctionnement automatique.

Qu’est-ce que le rotor d’une montre ?

La masse oscillante, également appelée rotor, d’une montre automatique est un poids métallique en forme de demi-cercle, ce composant de la montre oscille et tourne librement lorsque le porteur bouge son poignet. Le rotor est relié au ressort moteur par une série complexe d’engrenages, et il arme le ressort moteur lorsqu’il tourne. Ainsi, la montre reste alimentée en énergie aussi longtemps que le porteur la garde à son poignet.



Comment fonctionne le rotor d’une montre ?

Au cœur de chaque montre, se trouve un rotor qui alimente le ressort moteur en spirale. Cela active ensuite les engrenages internes, qui à leur tour déplacent les aiguilles de la montre. Comme une montre à remontage manuel, le ressort d’une montre automatique finit par perdre de l’énergie s’il n’est pas remonté. La montre nécessite alors un remontage manuel, sinon elle cessera de fonctionner une fois la réserve de marche complètement vide. Ce problème a été résolu par l’invention de la montre à quartz, que beaucoup de passionnés de montres ont trouvée sacrifier l’art et la beauté de l’horlogerie.

Au fur et à mesure que les montres mécaniques automatiques étaient adoptées, elles ont connu un essor spectaculaire dans les années 1960. Jusqu’à cette période, la taille et le poids d’un rotor standard constituaient le principal obstacle à ce développement. Finalement, avec l’évolution des techniques, il a été possible de l’intégrer plus facilement à l’intérieur du fonctionnement des montres-bracelets. Bien sûr, n’oublions pas la révolution du quartz qui est devenu un point central de l’horlogerie entre les années 1970 et 1980. Même si le quartz est considéré comme plus précis et plus efficace, le rotor des montres mécaniques reste bien évidemment plus artistique et charmant.
